Sports and fashion don’t always go hand-in-hand. But the U.S. Open of tennis is just around the corner, and it tends to be one of the more stylish events on the sports calendar. Even the fans tend to dress for the occasion, especially for night matches in the later stages of the two-week tournament. It’s a fun and festive event that’s meant to be celebrated. It also gives us a chance to see some of the latest and greatest outfits from some of the WTA’s fashionable ladies.
For the most part, this means interesting outfits for the court. Nike, Adidas, and other sportswear companies tend to pull out all the stops to make tennis players look stylish while they play, and usually the outfits are widely available. That makes the U.S. Open is a great tournament to watch if you want some inspiration for stylish workout gear. And in between matches, on off days, at pre-tournament events and in the celebrations that follow the championships, we can also glimpse tennis’s leading ladies wearing some gorgeous formal outfits.
There’s no telling what we’ll see in late August and early September when the tournament happens. Here are some of the most fashionable WTA athletes to keep an eye on in a few weeks.
Wozniacki has had mixed results in tournaments for a few years. Whenever she’s healthy she’s considered to be one of the deadliest players on the women’s tour, but she’s been inconsistent in the later rounds of majors. But she’s pretty much a sure thing when it comes to the fashion circuit. She’s always counted among the game’s most stylish players, and tends to do a lot with understated looks. She’s appeared in Sports Illustrated’s famous swimsuit edition, and if you visit her website you’ll find as much content about fashion as you will tennis.
We could actually write a fairly similar blurb for Ivanovic like we did Wozniacki. She’s an immensely talented tennis player with great titles in her background who’s also struggled a little bit to make a deep impact at major tournaments. She’s also a virtual guarantee to look stylish. Ivanovic is considered by many to be a beautiful athlete, and she tends to capitalize on that reputation by dressing very fashionably. She seems equally comfortable dressing in edgy, formal attire and elevating more casual looks, and she’s even created her own line over the years.
This 23-year-old Spanish-Venezuelan player is having quite a summer, and has defined herself as one of the stars of the future in the WTA. After winning the French Open in 2016, she was marked down as one of the favorites for this year’s tournament before a surprise exit in the fourth round. But she came back from that defeat by winning her first ever Wimbledon Championship, and she followed it up by making some of he biggest fashion statements to date. Muguruza turned heads at the Champions’ Dinner in a gorgeous Alexander McQueen dress, and will now be one to watch not just on the courts but at the events surrounding major tournaments as well.
It tends to be Serena Williams who gets the most attention for her style, but big sister Venus is about as fashion-forward as athletes come. Particularly with Serena out expecting a baby, the spotlight will be brighter than ever on Venus at this year’s Open, where she’ll have a legitimate chance to win. It was Williams who matched up against Muguruza in the Wimbledon final, and she’ll have the crowd behind her in New York. Regardless of how she plays we should expect some exciting looks from her both on and off the court. Venus tends to do interesting things with her look, using everything from her shoes to her hairstyle to make an impression, and it’s always fun to see what she comes up with for the Open.
There’s definitely a sporty edge to all of this, but as mentioned the U.S. Open is generally terrific for style-watching. These have been only a few of the many female athletes you might want to keep in mind if you tune in for the event.
See you soon
